Maria Ignacio is one of five Clackamas County high school seniors selected to win a scholarship from the Pacific Northwest College of Art for her sculpture, “Catrina”.

The third annual Clackamas Education Service District (ESD) Art Show celebrated the extraordinary artistic talent of more than 150 middle and high school students from 29 schools across Clackamas County. At the reception, local creatives Sandy Perazza, Mauricio Valadrian, and Christine Toth hand delivered awards to students, and answered questions about careers and hobbies in art.

This event connects the art community in such exciting ways. We’re thankful for the art instructors and artists that judge and sponsor the show. We’re also grateful for the many dedicated art teachers in our county who pass their passion on to our students – or in some cases, come in over their spring break to help us hang the art! This is genuinely our favorite time of year.

Administrators, superintendents, state officials and elected officials frequent the building where student artwork is displayed during the show. These same individuals make crucial decisions about funding and other support for arts curriculum and programs. Unlike athletic and performance-based arts disciplines, the visual arts have relatively few opportunities to receive this kind of exposure. This art show serves as a reminder of the importance of visual arts in schools.
