Data is a powerful tool that helps schools identify students’ needs, track progress, examine disparities, and inform long-term planning and day-to-day decision-making. At Clackamas Education Service District, our technology services team supports Synergy, a student information system used by a majority of Clackamas County school districts and over 150 districts in Oregon. A key player in the success of Synergy is Calvin Chen, one of our dedicated student information systems app developers.

Calvin has worked on many major projects over the years, such as transferring student information system management to Clackamas ESD to serve partner school districts more quickly and efficiently. Recently, Calvin solved a complex data integration issue that made it possible for one district to automatically import reading assessment data, saving school districts time and effort. He is now applying his data import solution in other districts.

“His commitment to excellence and dedication to innovation and customer service exemplifies the values of Clackamas ESD,” says his supervisor, Chris Kolb, assistant director of data and information systems.

Calvin grew up in China, immigrating to the United States to attend graduate school with just “$50 and two suitcases.” After completing his graduate studies, he embarked on a successful career in information technology. He joined Clackamas ESD in 2004.

Calvin’s dedication to innovation and problem-solving over his 20 years at Clackamas ESD has significantly enhanced our partner districts’ ability to leverage the power of data and has made it easier for educators to use data to make informed decisions and improve student outcomes.

“I have enjoyed every bit of my job at Clackamas ESD,” Calvin shares with pride.
