With all of the disruption and stress caused by the pandemic, summer has become a time for many children to learn new knowledge and skills, re-engage with their peers, and rediscover the joy of play. Our Clackamas ESD offerings this summer provided particularly meaningful extended learning opportunities that were rich in both academics and fun.
Over a five-week period, our early childhood special education program served about 75 children who were recommended for recovery services. Most of those services were provided at classroom sites in Oregon City and Gladstone. Each week focused on a different theme, such as camping or science. The engaging programs combined learning and fun to help children expand their skills.
Our K-21 special education program served about 100 students, roughly half through our Heron Creek Therapeutic Program and the other half through our Life Enrichment Education Program. The summer program focused on providing an extended school year to address regression in learning, recovery services and building continuity of relationships with adults.
At Heron Creek, students benefitted from credit recovery options, individualized tutoring, a STEM camp and fun activities such as basketball and disc golf camps.
LEEP students gained communication, transition and social-emotional skills. Art and physical education were embedded in the summer learning program, and students also took part in many community outings. The summer program ended with a “magical” field day, which set a joyful tone as students transition to the fall term.
