In May, Lake Oswego School District Superintendent Heather Beck was elected Chair of the Chief Administrators’ Council for Clackamas Education Service District.
To discover what the interests and priorities are for the new Chair, CESD interviewed her. Here’s what she shared with us.
Q. What’s something new and different we can expect out of Lake Oswego this year?
A. Lake Oswego will continue doing the important work of bringing to life this year’s theme: We are better together. Our work will focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion conversations and programs, while we begin to implement a $187 million bond program.
Q. How do you plan on spending Measure 98 money to improve high school graduation rates?
A. Measure 98 funds are being used to support secondary students who demonstrate early warning signs for being off track to graduate. The money will be used to institute immediate interventions and ongoing monitoring for at-risk students. We have added intervention specialists, reading, writing and math coaches, and a director of equity and strategic initiatives.
Q. What’s an article you read recently that you would recommend to your colleagues in education?
A. It is a book, not an article. “The Unlearning Leader: Leading for Tomorrow’s Schools Today” (2017) by Lubelfeld and Polyak.
Q. Share with us something you’ve seen on the internet recently that you found hysterical (meme, video, cartoon, etc.).
A. This man truly understands the needs of teachers and of students. Enjoy!
